Cal was a good kid. I played football with him from 7th grade on, and hung out with him sometimes. He had a tough upbringing but always had a positive attitude. I lost touch with him after highschool, but he would stop by to say hello to my father from time to time in downtown Pittsburgh. God rest his soul.

Our high school was so white that I always felt sorry for Calvin being one of the only blacks there. I don't know why I felt this way though as Calvin had many friends. He was so athletic in high school. I wonder what happened that he was taken at such a young age.

Such a sad ending for Calvin. He was really a great kid.

In reading the P-G piece, I had forgotten that in addition to being a great athlete, he was an artist.

He decided to shave his head in 8th grade for track season. He was already quite an attraction being an African American at Jefferson Junior High, but the shaved head created quite a stir. A couple other guys - I think Roy Speicher and Jim Fedigan followed suit in the days after.

Years later, I once took a Greyhound  to get back to college Virginia via DC after a break and Calvin was getting on the same bus to visit his sister. We rode together and caught up. When the bus arrived at the terminal, I told him that my layover was 3 hours. He told me, "you are not staying here. Its not safe here. I know - this is my town. You are coming with me."  And he was correct as we heard gunfire down the street as we left the bus station. So, I hung out with he and his sister for a few hours and had a really nice time.

A really kind, genuine guy.

I was sorry to hear the news about Cal, but it sparked a memory that made me smile. Remember how the high school main entrance lobby would be used as a polling place on voting day? Well, the lobby was crowded as Cal and I happened to walk in together and he quickly threw his arm around my shoulders and said, "let's give them something to talk about"...we hammed it up some too! We laughed and laughed. I remember him being a funny, gentle guy. I'm glad I got this opportunity to remember that moment. I wish his loved ones comfort in their grief.

Calvin Turner was a Good Guy and every time I saw him in School he was always Smiling and Friendly! In his Adult life he was a Special Artist. Also a very Caring Person! He always saw Sunshine through the Clouds! I for one am going to miss his spirit! He was a young man taken to soon! But God knows the Date and Time for us all! My Condolences to his Family! He will be sadly missed!

A dear friend had sent me Calvin's notice in the Post-Gazette. I was so saddened to hear of this terrible accident. ~ I remember Calvin so fondly ~ I used to run at night around my neighborhood, and Calvin would sometimes be on the same route, he didn't think it was a good idea to run alone, and decided on his own to be my running partner 3 nights a week. As I would set out, he'd be waiting in the front yard stretching and warming up. We forged a great friendship in High School because of our runs and long talks, but sadly lost track after college. My heart & prayers are with his family in their time of grief.

Man I loved and respected Calvin. He did some really nice things for me that he totally didn't have to do. I was under the impression he passed long ago so I'm really glad to hear he made it this far. I know he had some tough years after HS I hope he got through that and did some big things.
